Summary of 2013

One thing I will remember from 2013 is it's perfect summer (src).

Another Year has Passed By
It feels slightly unreal that an entire year has passed by since my previous race summary. The older I get the faster the time passes. Years turns into months, months to weeks, weeks to days, days to hours, hours to minutes and minutes to seconds. Thinking of this I always ask myself what I have achieved or done, during the last year. Often I realise that it's not that much. Which is strange, as when I look back I've always been quite busy. It is doing the same things over and over again that that makes time fly, and making time look like one grey mass looking back at it. That is why it is important for me having some new projects, doing some new things, and also revisiting activities and places I love.

A short list of highlights from this year:
2013 was the year I started, and ended, in the Land of the Rising Sun ^.
2013 was the year I started skiing again, and had the best winter in ages.
2013 was the year I had tibia stress fracture.
2013 was the year I made foreneNo, or the new version of runners.no ^.
2013 was the year with the best summer ^  in Norway since 1997 (as I remember).
2013 was the year I did the Prism Break Challenge.
2013 was the year I swallowed a toothpick.
2013 was the year I became the most hated Norwegian on a race track.
2013 was the year I earned money on something virtual, and paid off my mortgage ^.
2013 was the year I made something that at least I call a film.
2013 was the year I once again got myself a proper camera ^.

I've written quite a lot of posts on chronicles.no in 2013. 196 to be exact. The main reason for spending so much time on this is that I like to write, and keep record. I could of course have done this in a non public space. But I like the fact that other can gain some knowledge, get enjoyed or get provoked by what I write. I put more energy into something I know that other will read. I have written on the Internet for several years, but that is no guarantee for me continuing. Starting and stopping is my way. But I think I will continue in 2014 as well, at least for a while.

Running
In terms of running 2013 was the year I ran mainly uphill, and mainly in the forest. Much due to the fracture I got from running on hard surface, but also because I'm bored with the more traditional sessions. It is a year I will remember for a lot of very fun and varied training with Mr RG and Mr LG, next to the less varied 300m hill interval session on Mondays. The training gave good results (PB on SRM x 2, SRM x 3 a solid 10 km terrain race, and several other personal track records), compared with my expectations and specially since I have not done this few kilometres since I started running back in 2009.

When it comes to races I have only signed up for two next year. And those are not located in Norway. I won't do many races as a result of the fee on running that I think is negative (OK, stupid!), and worth protesting against. Too bad, but I'm sure I'll find something else to do.

Onsen
People love onsen ^. No clothes allowed. A small cloth is all you need to cover your precious parts, or put on the top of your head when seated in the onsen. And when you shower you sit on a chair. Interesting indeed.

Tattoos
Having tattoos being in Japan as a bad thing, as you will not be allowed entering many places, like onsen and gyms. These rules are introduced to prohibit Yakuzas ^ from entering.

Vending machines
There are vending machines everywhere, and you can buy anything from them. Hot tea, noodle soup, cigarettes, soda, you name it.

Toilet seats
Toilet seats are heated, and it is great to sit down. When getting used to this it is tough going back to using non-heated seats.

Mangakissa
Want a unique and cheap place to stay for the night, try a "mangakissa" or a manga café ^.

Other hotels
Or try a capsule hotel ^, or a love hotel ^ (the latter might not be that fun is you are on your own).

Screaming birds
There is a special kind of birds on the island, that are really noisy.

Mini bottles
Very small bottles, with miscellaneous drinks, for miscellaneous purposes, seems popular. They sell them everywhere.

No tipping
When you get the receipt you pay what it says. You don't pay more, or less. No tipping at restaurants or elsewhere. Brilliant. They way it should be everywhere.

Bath water
You fill the bathtub once, and then take a bath one at a time. In other words everyone living in a house share the same bath water. You do wash and clean yourself properly before bathing though.

Disabling Touch SP2

For the time being the Surface Pro 2 ^ is my only computer. However, I do use it as a laptop and not as a tablet (for the latter I have my Nexus 7 ^). Due to this I wanted to disable the touch screen on the device. This as I accidentally wiped a few folders away while cleaning the screen.

Disabling the touch screen is simple:
1) Open the Control Panel ^.
2) Search for, and open "Device Manager".
3) Open the "Human Interface Devices" tab
4) Scroll down to "HID-compliant touch screen"
5) Right click -> Properties
6) Click "Disable".

Done! To enable touch screen again, just enable this driver once more.

Exercise Program 2013

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is my magical program for the main part of the year 2013. The program that brought me to sub 39 on 10 km in terrain, and 3 x 12 muscle ups (or 1 x 13).

Monday
  • 10 x 300m hill intervals (about 1h 15m inc warm up).
  • Strength training (about 1.5 hours).

Tuesday
  • Hill or stair session with Mr RG (1 - 2 hours).

Wednesday
  • Strength session (about 1.5 hours).
  • SRM x1 or x2, normally slow, sometimes fast, depending on what I felt like (30m - 1h).

Thursday
  • Most weeks no running at all, but a few times I did track sessions with Mr Pain (1.5 - 2 h).
  • Strength session (about 1.5 - 2.5 h).

Friday
  • Strength session (about 1.5 - 2.5 h).

Saturday
  • Race day, alternatively a track session, or chill out.

Sunday
  • If no race, slow trail run in the forest, with Mr RG (1.5 h).



Summary
I spent quite a few hours every week on exercising (10-15 hours), because I love to do so. I enjoy the combination of strength training and running. I'm pretty sure I could have achieved better results if I focused on one thing. That is no goal for me though.

In terms of distance I ran about 40-50 km a week. Most of my running sessions were of high intensity. Monday, Tuesdays and Saturdays were normally quite tough. However, I tried to listen to my body, and my mind. If I felt tired I shorten the session, went lighter or skipped them. This worked well, as I had no ambition of doing any marathons, nor many races longer than 10 km.

I have had no injuries at all this season, and I have continued to improved my running PBs. This means I've done something right.



Now what
Right now I'm doing close to no training at all. I'm down to 15 km a week in running, and currently no strength training. I've got a 1.5 months season break. I'm gaining weight and getting lazy. So I will get another wakeup call when spring comes, as I do every year. However, I hope to soon spend some time in telemark gear. As well I might get stressed, and start training a bit more than what I do for the time being.

Merīkurisumasu 2013

It has become a tradition (if more than once can count as that) dropping by Tokyo buying myself runners for Christmas. Last year I discovered Art Sports near Shibuya (I even have a "pointo kardo"). A shop with a great variety in running shoes, including models limited to Japan. As a "Nihon Otaku" (Japan nerd) I find the latter specially appealing. I should not forget to mention that running shoes in Norway is ridiculous expensive as well, so I have more or less stopped buying shoes there.

... and this is only one of several walls full of shoes.

I picked up two models from Art Sports this time.



Mizuno Wave Rider 17 (link)
I've had some Mizuno shoes, and liked them all. They are wide enough for my feet, which is far from a matter of course.

adidas Sonic Boost (link)
Felt good on my feet, and I've earlier been quite satisfied with adidas. This choice was simple.

Another place where I found some nice shoes, was ICI Sport's Harajuku branch. It's located next to the station, more or less here. They had several Salomon shoes on sale, but unfortunately only one on sale in my size.

Evisu the Tokyo, Ebisu
I have not just been shoe shopping. I've got myself a new pair of Japanese hand made Evisu jeans. (No. 2 - 2001 (regular fit)), with Japanese Blue (JB) paint. The colour being limited to the Tokyo shop, a 10 minutes walk from Ebisu station.
Price: ¥ 21.000 + 1.100 (paint) = 22.100 (1300 NOK at the time of writing)

Ark, Akihabara
In Nerd Town, or Akihabara, you find Ark (located here). A great shop for nerds like me. I picked up a new model of the Zowie EC1 evo mouse (which is my favourite), next to some other useful nerdy items, like mouse pads, cabels, a brilliant USB 3 HUB (SilverStone’s External Port EP01) and more.
Price (EC1): ¥ 7124 (420 NOK in the time of writing)




Softmap, Akihabara
I had to drop by Softmap to locate another model of my favourite keyboard, the Filco fkbn87mc/efb2.
Price: ¥ 10.800 (635 NOK at the time of writing)

Yodobashi Akiba, Akihabara
At Yodobashi Akiba you can get most things though. Located next to Akihabara station (exactly here), and with its more than six floors stuffed with gadgets, it is a popular place to spend some Yen. If you get a loyalty program ("pointo kardo") you quickly save up points. I got myself some new camera equipment here, for the Sony Alpha 7.

I might go to Daikanyamachō, to see if I find any nice locally designed clothes. As well I have plans to drop by Hakusan Megane, for some eyewear. But with this I have more or less checked off most items from my wish list. Now it's time to do less shopping and more running, relaxing, reading and writing.

Arriving Tokyo

Going to Tokyo as a tourist? Here are a few tips that might help upon your arrival.

At Takadanobaba station (src).

Ask
First of all, do not be afraid of asking people for help. Even though most don't speak fluent or much English they are normally very polite, and will try to help you as best they can.

Data SIM
Nowadays you don't need anything but data traffic on your mobile. Order a "data traffic only" SIM card from eConnect Japan. Do this before you travel, and have it waiting for you at the post office at the airport (the post office at Narita is located at the forth floor, inside the airport shopping mall).

Luggage Transport
Do you have a lot to carry? Let someone else do the job! There are baggage deliver services at the airport. Drop of your heavy bags with them, and let them drive them to your place in the city. It's cheap and super convenient (I used GPA, and was very satisfied).

Plan Your Commute
Google Maps is brilliant for finding the best way to get from A to B, or for example from the airport to your hotel. The trains are fast, and on time. Use them instead of considering a taxi, which quickly will become very expensive.

PASMO
As you will frequently use the trains in Tokyo, you should get a PASMO card to pay for your travel. With it you don't have to figure out the price from one place to another. And don't worry, you can refill the card as you are about to leave a station, next to when you enter.

Cash
Make sure you have plenty of cash. Japan is a land where you use a lot of cash. It is also not that easy to find ATMs where you can withdraw cash, using for example a VISA card. Post offices and Citibank for the rescue!

Stress
Personally I am not a huge fan of what Christmas has become. Overall, I find it more stressful than enjoyable. Anyhow, one thing that our family has done though is putting an end to the madness of buying meaningless gifts. When it comes to the grown ups we have everything we need, more or less. So we have decided not to buy each other gifts at all, for Christmas. I like it this way.

OGPP
Before we ended up with a gift-less Christmas we had a period with OGPP. OGPP is an abbreviation for "One Gift Per Person". A great concept, which means that you will only get one gift, and you will only buy one gift. Together you decide on the amount of money to spend, and whom is getting gifts from whom. Then you spend all your energy on buying one nice gift, instead of several less useful. The year after you change the person you will buy to and get from.

Ski Preparation With Berntsen

This summer I got a ski preparation course of Hedda, for my birthday. I brought my camera and made a 33 minutes long movie, where she describes all the important steps in making your alpine or telemark skis as good as "new". Note: the dialogue is in Norwegian.

Disclaimer: The video is edited on an old PC, which is not managing exporting HD quality. Hence the sound is all out of sync. I might re-export the movie on a later stage, from a newer machine.

Epic Privacy Browser

Epic.

An interesting browser, focusing on privacy, is the Epic Privacy Browser.

From Lifehacker:
"Out of the box Epic Privacy Browser blocks websites that track you, ads, and more. It doesn't store cookies, your history, cache, autofill, or anything else. When you close the browser, everything you did is deleted."

From Wikipedia:
"Epic's default configuration takes proactive approach to ensuring session data (such as cookies, history, and cache) are removed when the browser is exited. The browser also includes a proxy service that can be enabled at the user's discretion, and is automatically enabled when using a search engine. Other features, such as preferring SSL connections and always sending a Do Not Track header promote a heightened state of privacy in comparison to some other browsers.[8]
Supplementary services found in the Chromium browser that send data to external servers, such as address bar suggestion and installation tracking, are removed in Epic to reduce the scope of potential data leakage.[8]

The Weight of Love
To rank the different blogs (feeds) and posts (entries) there are a lot of questions that has to be answered, like what the weight of love is. I have found the answer to this, but I will keep it as a secret. Love alone is not enough, there are multiple factors that are used in the ranking. What other factors I will keep secret as well, to prevent gaming of the system.

Secrecy alone is not sufficient. Several measures are made to make sure the ranking is as accurate as possible. Punishment of actions that looks like cheating will also be considered, if needed. In true NSA spirit a lot of data is logged and stored.

Why bother with all this, you might ask yourself? The reason is that I have some plans for some foreneNo awards, for those who participate. Hopefully this will start sometimes during Q2 2014.

At the moment I'm working on version 0.3 of the engine, which will fix some bugs and introduce some new features. The plan is to launch this version in December, before I go on a little holiday. With the new update the ranking should become even more accurate.

Five months

Commits done on GitHub - punchcard.

I ended up using about five months, from May till October, developing the first version of forene.no (runners.no version 2.0). Or "the web bundling engine" as I call it. The number of hours I have put down is unknown. I did not work on days with nice weather, and this year we did have a lot of very nice weather. That aside, I've spent a fair bit of hours, as I spent spent numerous nights at home, coding.

With version 0.1 of forene no the front end (the stuff that defines what the users to see) consisted of 865 lines of code. The tech savvy can check out the front end code on GitHub, being one HTML file and one JavaScript file. For an overview of the technology used please visit forene.no.

The back end (the engine) is far more complex, and I have written:
- 860 lines of Python.
- 2946 lines of PL/SQL.
Next to several lines of SQL, spending hours on a proper database model, plus more.

I also ended up developing my own deployment tool, kDeployer, for ease of the deployment process.

Version 0.1 (Acamar) was launched on the 10th of October, as runners.no version 2. It was done as a soft launch, in parallel with the old version of runners.no. Version 0.2 (Achernar) was launched 27th of November, and completely replaced the old runners.no version.

SETTING THE STYLE

HOW

Settings > Style configurator > Solarized > Default Style > Font: Source Code Pro & Font size: 12

CREATING THE MACRO

I need one macro, to select / mark / highlight current word.

HOW

  • Open a document with some text.
  • Place the cursor on one word.
  • In the menu go to "Macro > Start recording".
  • Hold down Ctrl and press left arrow.
  • Hold down Ctrl + Shift and press right arrow.
  • In the menu go to "Macro > Stop recording".
  • Go to "Macro > Save Current Recorded Macro".
  • Assign the shortcut of your choice, mine is "Ctrl + Shift + J".

COMPLETION

By default "Function Completion" has got shortcut "Ctrl + Space" and "Word Completion" has "Ctrl + Enter". I like it the other way around.

Crashplan Reinstall

How to update to the latest version

# first uninstall
/opt/CrashPlan-install/uninstall.sh -i /opt/crashplan/
Would you like to switch users and uninstall as root? : n
rm -rf /opt/crashplan/

# then reinstall
cd /opt

If you want to store the old installation files
(alternatively just "rm" the install directory)

mv CrashPlan-install CrashPlan-install_old
wget http://download.crashplan.com/installs/linux/install/CrashPlan/CrashPlan_3.5.3_Linux.tgz
(found here http://www.crashplan.com/consumer/thankyou.html?os=Linux)tar zfx [name_of_downloaded_file]
( rm [name_of_downloaded_file] )
cd CrashPlan-install
nano install.sh

Edit the first line of the file from:
!/bin/bash

to
!/opt/bin/bash

do the same thing (replacing from #!/bin/bash to #!/opt/bin/bash) for the uninstall shell script:
nano uninstall.sh
… and for the engine:
nano /opt/CrashPlan-install/scripts/CrashPlanEngine

run the install script
./install.sh
Would you like to switch users and install as root? (y/n) : n
What directory do you wish to install CrashPlan to? : /opt/crashplan
What directory do you wish to store backups in? : /opt/crashplan/manifest

Your selections:
CrashPlan will install to: /opt/crashplan
And store datas in: /opt/crashplan/manifest

Unpacking /./CrashPlan_3.2.cpi ...
./install.sh: /opt/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
(NOTE, if you do get the "bad interpreter" error you have not done the above thing, changing from #!/bin/bash to #!/opt/bin/bash on the first line of the script "/opt/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine")

Commands
[/opt/CrashPlan-install] # /opt/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanEngine stop

Vinterkarusellen #3 2013

Race #46 2013 - 2.1km - 09:33 - Saturday 30th of November

A nice day at Blystadlia.

This great and fun hill race at Blystadlia marks a worthy finish to a nice running season. Only (as compared with previous years) 46 races this year. A fun and short hill race, that luckily went faster now than in 2012. A year ago I was not in good shape, today I had no excuses, except for not being better. Read the 2012 report for more details about the event.

Well organised, this year as last.

Shorts and tee, but of course!

Mr RG was satisfied, before and after the race. Once again he did beat me.

Warming up. Ida (in the middle) did a comeback today and won the race. Well done.
